We have a long way to go, but, until we really reconcile this part of our past, we're going to have wounds that are going to be unhealed. I was really skeptical about the project in general, initially, before my agent gave me the script, because I wondered how they could do this year after year as a television show. But when I read it I was really blown away by the writing and the originality and the fact that this story actually hasn't been told. The Underground Railroad, which was the first integrated civil rights movement, is a part of our history that not a lot of us know about. And it's actually a very empowering side of our history. Rosalee is a very complicated character and you don't get scripts like this often.
What did you have to do to get the role?
So she kept working, and she waited for just the right role, which did eventually come, and brought about her return to primetime TV. She's since spoken positively about the experience. "I remember the feeling of performing in front of a live audience, and being able to feed off of them," she said.

It was probably one of the more furious moments she’s had with me. “Why didn’t you tell me where you were? If it all sounds like the makings of a sitcom, well, in some ways it was. The six Smollett siblings — Jurnee lands in the middle — starred together on ABC’s 1994 series On Our Own and were especially close as their stay-at-home mother, Janet, homeschooled them together. A young Jurnee used her acting income to help make ends meet, and before her parents separated, her late father, Joel, noticed her math skills and taught her to be the family bookkeeper.

The Charles Lewis Hinkel-designed house has close to 4,000 square feet of space and will indeed pack a full family in its 4 bedrooms and 3.5 baths. And if you think that’s a hefty price, check out Jeff Franklin’s $85 million house in Beverly Hills, where Bob Saget’s funeral was held. By April 2019, the 1709 Broderick Street house was wrapping up major renovation work — done by award-winning high-end residential architecture firm Landry Design Group — and was listed for sale. But after Franklin was fired from Fuller House in 2018 following complaints about verbally abusive and vulgar language in the writers’ room and on the set of the series, he decided to sell the property. The Broderick St. house was used to film the opening credits and establishing shots for both Full House and its Netflix sequel Fuller House, but no interior scenes were filmed here. But the 3,125-square-foot Victorian featured on Full House is actually set in the trendy Pacific Heights neighborhood, roughly one mile away from Alamo Square, where the Painted Ladies are located.
Smollett, who also served as an executive producer, stars as Dolores, a single mother whose 10-year-old son, Malik, urges her toward a brighter future. “Dolores hasn’t really been dreaming in a while, and she learns to dream again from her son,” she says. The story is set against the backdrop of tragedy, the real life shooting death of 7-year-old Dantrell Davis in Chicago’s Cabrini-Green public housing project, where the film is set. The actress, who got her start as a child actor on shows like Full House and has established herself as a forceful presence in a wide range of recent roles, plays inmate Lizzy in Netflix’s sci-fi prison thriller Spiderhead.
In “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off,” John Hughes cuts between Cameron’s blank expression and an impressionist oil portrait of a child, using visual language to say that Cameron feels blurry, too. Her kids instead turn to the artist Walter Ellison’s painting of a train station and spend a full minute commenting on its socioeconomic power dynamics. Last year the cast was in San Francisco to celebrate the season 2 debut of Fuller House on Netflix. The cast stopped by the Tanner house and put their hands and feet in the cement. A friend of mine visited the house recently and said that the hands and feet prints are not on display outside of the house.
The spectacular service demonstrates a high level of quality at this place. From the visitors' point of view, the atmosphere is peaceful. As for the Google rating, this spot achieved 4.4.
He texted me back a picture of his pitching portfolio–directors use pitching portfolios to get the gig–and next to the name Rosalee was my picture. I have to say, when I first was cast in Birds of Prey, I just remember I called a bunch of my mentors who had more experience in the comic book world. Like Samuel L. Jackson, I remember calling him and being like, “OK, so like, yo, what do I do? Is there a way in which I should approach this any differently than how I would approach any other character? I always do so much research of the world.” And he said, “Baby, just go and piss on your territory.” (Laughs.) So I’ve been just so truly, truly humbled by the response from the fans. The contrast between the two directors’ styles is telling.

All the while, the score’s violins command attention, at first frolicking like gulls that just swooped in from Lake Michigan, then doing their utmost to add emotional oomph to a slender plot. I found a great collaborator in Minhal [Baig], our filmmaker and screenwriter. She and I really just dug in and did some script notes and things leading up to the shooting, and [we] had a great collaboration with Participant, who produced the film as well, and Joe Pirro, the producer. So, it was a great team, and I plan to do more of this. I want to see more filmmakers of color; different gazes pointed at us to help expand stories. With all of the incredible success Jurnee Smollett has had throughout her decades-long career, it checks out that she seems to be brimming with confidence.
The show ran for five seasons, with the final season premiering on Netflix on June 2, 2020. Bob Saget reprised his role as Danny Tanner for 15 episodes, including the premiere and the finale. In fact, the entire original series was filmed live before a studio audience at the Lorimar Studios in Los Angeles, with no actual footage being taken inside the house.
Interestingly, Jurnee told The Hollywood Reporter that she and her siblings performed "Shut 'Em Down" by Public Enemy to audition for the series. "I don't even think my mom was trying to make a statement, it's genuinely who we were," she said. Smollett's last episode was in the Season 7 finale, "A House Divided," in which Denise and Teddy help Michelle keep her family in one home after they had considered going their separate ways.

From the start, including the first scene she ever filmed on the show, she recalls receiving the warmest welcome. “The audience applauded as I walked in front of them and I gave them a peace sign. In my head, that was my inner Janet Jackson moment,” she remembers.
